About Wicked Weave
The English word "text" has its origins in the Latin verb "texere", which means "to weave" or "to compose skillfully" and the noun "textus", which means "texture" or "tissue".
In a text, words are strung into threads of sentences, and those threads are then woven into one another to create a finished text. Like a woven piece of fabric, texts have texture; they make us experience that texture when we engage with them, they make us feel things and stimulate thought. Each has their own peculiarities and patterns, their own little flaws and virtues, and each of them is complex enough that no two people will view it exactly the same way.
A text can be understood very broadly: What you are reading right now is a text. A series of images can be a text, a novel, a film, a comic book, and a video game are all texts.
This complexity fascinates us, and as scholars of film and English literature, we want to bring this fascination and joy to you.
Wicked Weave was started in July 2024 by Mischief and Sherigan - We are friends who got to know each other at university, and shared a passion for texts in all their forms.
We wanted a platform that we control, so that we can offer you the following:
- Articles ranging from first impressions and opinion pieces to full textual analysis. Check out our categories.
- A monthly newsletter to keep you in the loop.
- Our podcast PourOverThink, where you can listen to two friends discuss their latest obsession.
- An ad-free experience: We are financed entirely through our Ko-Fi, so you can decide what our work is worth to you.
We would love to do this full-time eventually, and while we have no illusions about the amount of time and effort that will take, every bit of financial support to keep the lights on is greatly appreciated.
We are considering community-focused subscriptions, such as poll access and behind-the-scenes posts for the future, but want to keep our main body of work accessible to anyone for free.
All that we ask is that you spread the word if you enjoy what we do, and that you consider supporting us by becoming a part of the community. If you're feeling generous beyond that, we have a Ko-Fi linked below for you to support us.
That would be wicked.
